About

THE PRESS

Top Pen Press publishes work that illuminates, confronts and perplexes perceptions of queer people of color. The goal of the press is to foster greater personal and intellectual investigation and understanding of the complexities of lives outside the heterosexual, American mainstream by publishing meticulously well-written literary novels, short story and essay collections, anthologies, as well as poetry.  Top Pen Press seeks to introduce and promote the most provocative and creative writers of these new queer times.

SUBMISSIONS GUIDELINES

Writers may submit a query letter to Top Pen Press outlining their book projects, as well as providing biographical and contact information. A one page writing sample relevant to the project under consideration should also be included. Writers whose queries are accepted will then be asked to submit a thorough book proposal. CALLS FOR SUBMISSIONS

Transgressions

Top Pen Press is seeking submissions of poetry, short fiction and essays for an anthology to be published in 2010 tentatively titled Transgressions: Queer Writers Explore Opposite Sex Attraction. We are seeking well-thought out and well-written work that examines and illuminates the existence of and issues related to opposite sex attraction among LGBT men and women.

Were you ever attracted to individuals of the opposite sex? When and why did such attractions diminish? Why did you cease to act on those tendencies? Have you ever been surprised by an overwhelming attraction to someone of different sex than your own in your adult queer life? What feelings accompany such instances of arousal—amusement, elation, fear, intimidation, repulsion, confusion, etc.? How do you relate to the reproductive organs of people of the opposite sex? Does pornography including models of differing sex than your own (gay, lesbian or straight porn) stimulate you? What role does an individual’s gender identity (regardless of biological sex) play in your intimate pursuits? Is your exclusively lesbian or gay identity (as opposed to bisexual) simply a natural occurrence or a complex (perhaps subconscious) socio-political, or otherwise motivated, decision?

Transgressions: Queer Writers Explore Opposite Sex Attraction seeks to advance the discussion of the sexuality spectrum from the perspective of LGBT-identified individuals who are willing to analyze in an honest, and perhaps uncommon, way their mental and physical transgressions of the borders of their queer identity.

Authors may submit for consideration up to ten poems and/or three prose pieces (with a 30 double-spaced page maximum). Please include a bio and complete contact information with your submission sent via email to editor@toppenpress.com.

Please include “Transgressions” in the subject line of your submission.
